The Gate That Stays Open

And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
Revelation 21:25 (KJV)

It is one of the quietest details in all of Scripture, and one of the largest. John is describing the city that comes down from God, and he notices something about its gates: they are never shut. Not at dusk, not at midnight, not in any hour of any age. In a world that has always measured safety by what it keeps out, God is measured by what he keeps open.

The gates of a city were closed for one reason — fear of what was coming. Night fell, the walls shut, and the city waited for morning. But John says there shall be no night there. The reason the gates stay open is that there is nothing left to be afraid of. Every enemy has been dealt with, every debt settled, every captive released. What remains is a city whose doors stand wide because love has made fear unnecessary.

Read this verse slowly the next time you are certain that some door has closed on you. The story does not end with a locked gate. It ends with gates that never close at all — because there is no night left in which to close them.

Prayer

Father, thank you that your city has no night and its gates never shut. Teach me to live today as someone whose door has already been opened. Amen.
