The Restitution of All Things
Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
Peter is preaching, and he reaches for a word bigger than forgiveness: restitution. Not merely pardon — restoration. The prophets did not speak of a rescue that leaves the wreckage where it fell. They spoke of everything put back.
That word covers more than you might think. It covers the years the locusts ate. It covers the marriages, the minds, the wasted decades, the graves. It covers the groaning creation itself, which Paul says will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. Nothing is written off as a permanent loss.
If the end of the story is restitution, then grief is not the last word about anything you have lost. Hold your losses the way a farmer holds seed in winter — honestly, but not finally. The times of restitution were spoken by every prophet, and God does not repeat himself in vain.
Prayer
God of the prophets, I bring you what is still broken in me and in those I love. Restore it all, as you have promised, until nothing is left outside your mercy. Amen.
